Ben's Aikido Origin
I started aikido because I hurt my shoulder and I couldn’t rock climb. That was 3 and 1/2 years ago.
And now, aikido is my work, it’s my play, it’s my exercise, my philosophy, it’s part of my identity, the dojo is my home, and the David/Kramer family and all my Senpai and Kohai are my fam.
I didn’t expect to find Aikido so fulfilling when I started. It was just a diversion till my shoulder healed.
The origin of my Aikido was a random act. Originating from a need to exercise, play and fulfill a fantasy of being a martial artist when I grow up.
All though I take my training more seriously now, the play and imaginings when I put on the gi and or pick up my wooden weapons are at the heart of my training. I can’t help but pretend to be my favorite heroes and villains from books, graphic novels, video games and film.
Happily I’ve discovered that aikido is more than just play and exercise. I’ve found comfort in the philosophies, strength and confidence from the training, and community and family at the dojo. So even when I’m not feeling playful, I have a multitude of other motivations to keep me practicing.
With that said, I was fortunate to have met such a wonderful group of aikidoka when I started.
Sensei Galen and Sensei Al, Paul,Lorraine, Grahame and too many others to name, welcomed, encouraged and inspired me to start and continue this art, that I now love dearly.
See you on the mat.
